The story Behind Stone Dynamics

Stone Dynamics Gallery was opened in 1986 by Stuart Danks. The gallery provided a much needed platform for younger artists to expose their work internationally, and quickly established itself as a proving ground for artists emerging at that time. His extensive knowledge and experience ensures that customers view and purchase only the very best sculptures – carefully chosen for their originality, creativity and quality. Stuart is the son of Jean Danks, well known Southern African artist. She served as Chairperson of the Rhodesian Society of Arts in 1975, and as Keeper of the National Gallery from 1975 to 1978.

Our Mission

Contemporary Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture has its roots in the 1950’s when Frank McEwen, the first Director of the Zimbabwe National Gallery, started an art workshop. McEwen was impressed by the exciting and uninhibited work produced by the artists and encouraged them to try sculpting with stone, while teaching them the value of artistic integrity. The results were astounding and instantly drew international attention. Sculptors such as Takawira, Munyaradzi, Mukomberanwa and Mariga earned acclaim from art critics around the world through exhibitions in Africa, Europe and North America. A wonderful new culture of modern sculpture was born!
