Walter was born in 1973. He is the son of Joram Mariga who is often considered the main artist who inspired the contemporary stone sculpture movement in Zimbabwe. The Mariga family originates from Nyanga, in the mountainous eastern part of Zimbabwe. He learnt to sculpt with his father who was a tough but fair task master and at the age of 12 he began to really appreciate the stone and sculpture and how to use his tools. By the age of 17 he was carving full time.
Walter now lives and works from his home in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe but travels back often to his spiritual home in Nyanga to seek inspiration and to collect the special stones he needs for his work. The main theme of his work is nature and women. He loves the emotion, love and beauty that women give to the world and the freedom and symbols of majesty that nature provides.
His work is currently shown in Europe, United Kingdom, North America and Japan. He also maintains a close bond with Stone Dynamics Gallery where is work is permanently shown at the gallery in Victoria Falls Hotel
